Don't Come Out Unless You Are Serious About Getting Better

1) Be Better
In track, our objective is to make student-athletes better.  Track and field events focus on athletic qualities such as speed, endurance, acceleration, quickness, power, and jumping ability.  Track and field athletes are just that:  they are athletes who can easily compete in any type of sport.  Each of the qualities mentioned above can directly transfer to most other sports.  For example, speed and acceleration are obviously important in getting to a ball or a tackle;  jumping ability is also important when going after a ball whether it be a basketball, volleyball, football, or soccer ball;  the athlete with better endurance is likely to perform better late in games.   Think about how your performance in the sport that you normally play would improve if your speed, acceleration, stamina, quickness, and jumping ability also improved.  During practice, we focus on improving and developing these skills through technique drills, weightlifting, plyometric drills, and a variety of other activities.  You can use track and field to be a better athlete and the bottom line is that when you return to play your favorite sport, you will be better.

Let me give you an example of how this has worked in the past.  Leo Olvera was a sprinter for us for four years.  His final season, he was awarded “Track & Field Athlete of the Year” in the Orange Coast League, earned four All-League honors in four events and won each of the four events, broke league records and school records.  At the end of the school year he was awarded “Athlete of the Year” at Godinez Fundamental High School.  He also played football, he used track to make him a better athlete.

Ask yourself this:  Are you serious about getting better at the sport(s) that you normally participate?  We can help!

2) Winning doesn't always mean first.  Winning mean you're doing better than you've ever done before.
If you come out for track & field, you are going to get better, faster and stronger.

3) SUCCESS
The track & field program has traditionally been one of the most successful teams at Godinez.  Currently, the boy's team won their first league title in nearly 3 years and we have had qualifiers at the CIF Finals meet 2011.  In the past 3 years, we've had many school records broken.

Because of the unique nature of the sport, track & field allows you to experience success in two ways:  as an individual and as a team.  If you are a talented athlete on a team you will help your team score many points to win track meets, as an individual you can stand out and be an outstanding athlete in your event(s).  There are fifteen events in each division:  100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, 3200m, 100/110m Hurdles, 300m Hurdles, 4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay, Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Shot Put and Discus.  There are four divisions:  Boys Varsity, Boys Frosh/Soph, Girls Varsity and Girls JV.

One final measure of success is what track & field can offer you after you graduate from high school:  A chance to compete at a college. Over the past 3 years, numerous track athletes from Godinez Fundamental High School have been given a chance to compete for a college team.  If this is something that you are interested in, that opportunity is definitely there for you.
